New, more sensitive metal detector installed at Stora Enso factory
In June of 2021 the TC180120 tunnel coil and the QDF102 electronic unit, both designed and built by Quality Devices Finland Ltd. (QDF), were installed at Stora Enso’s Sunila factory in Kotka, Finland.
The metal detector was placed at the start of the softwood pulp conveyor, in front of the choppers. This detector replaced an outdated analogue unit. The QDF metal detector prevents hazardous metal objects from reaching the chopper blades.

“In the metal detector itself we used the latest coil technology we have developed, which allows even 30% higher detection sensitivity than traditional detectors. Additionally, the digital signal processing increases reliability and decreases error messages significantly compared to analogue technology.” Says Matti Pönkkä, CEO of Quality Devices Finland Ltd.
The Sunila factory is part of Stora Enso’s Biomaterials division and manufactures softwood pulp, lignin, turpentine and pine oil.
Quality Devices Finland Ltd. is a leading Finnish company designing and manufacturing metal detectors.
